Indoor Air Quality
Most IAQ filters come in two varieties: electric and media. There are several different types of each offering different levels of filtration. It truly depends on what you, the customer, wants when considering which filter system you want installed. HEPA filters can filter out particles down to 0.3 microns and ionizing electric filters can remove particles down to 0.1 microns.
The addition of UV lights can eliminate airborne bacteria and kill algae growing on heating and cooling coils in the dark. They cause no airflow restrictions and usually are easy to install. Unlike some of the IAQ filters, which need to be installed during installation, these can be installed in existing systems. UV lights also reduces airborne biological contaminants in the home. Health threats such as viruses, bacteria, mold, and allergens are all sterilized by exposure to uv light. Air in the home cycles through the central air system repeatedly passing by the disinfecting UV light again and again.
A whole house humidifier can be of great value in the winter when humidity levels drop. They make it feel warmer, keep your skin from drying so rapidly, and is good for antique furniture. The new humidifiers produce steam and don't require so much maintenance.
